    • eBird: This is another free app that is both a database and reporting tool that allows you to report and save your bird sightings as well as to see what birds have been reported recently in your location, anywhere in the world.

My Bird Sightings

This mostly pictorial guide of 18 birds common to North Carolina is available in English, Spanish and Mandarin versions. It is appropriate for 4 to7 year-olds and can be used at home or on bird walks. Children enjoy putting a sticker next to the picture of the bird they just saw. We recommend printing these guides on white card stock. For bird walks, it is helpful to attach a string or yarn for carrying over the shoulder. We typically attach a strip of 18 stickers to the front with double-stick tape. Alternatively, children can draw a star or place a check mark next to their sightings.

Leave Your Leaves Education Toolboxes for Teachers

These toolboxes were developed by New Hope Bird Alliance and local teachers, following curricula guidelines for North Carolina with grade appropriate information based on NC Science Standards. They focus on the important environmental action called Leave Your Leaves. Each toolbox comes with a lesson plan and activities for the students to learn about the role of the ground layer in a healthy ecosystem. “Leave Your Leaves” provides grade specific information about the forces at work behind the twin crises of climate change and loss of biodiversity and how the benefits of leaving your leaves—more beneficial insects, less stormwater runoff, healthier trees, less air pollution, etc.—can help ameliorate these crises.
