Online Educational Resources

In addition to programs and bird walks offered through our local chapter, there are many online educational resources available through the National Audubon Society and other sources including:
- Guide to North America Birds: A searchable index of North American birds developed by National Audubon.
- Audubon Adventures: Engaging students in grades 3 through 8 with the natural world developed by National Audubon.
- At Audubon.org, click on Explore Birds for other great resources on a variety of topics, such as choosing binoculars and other gear, bird photography, bird feeding and more.
- Birds and Bird Watching: Includes information and resources about birding in North Carolina developed by Audubon North Carolina.
- All About Birds: Your online guide to birds and bird watching, developed by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. More from Cornell Lab of Ornithology:
- Merlin Bird App: Download this free app to your smart phone or tablet and identify birds by their songs and calls. An amazing tool to use at home, on a hike, or when traveling.
- eBird: This is another free app that is both a database and reporting tool that allows you to report and save your bird sightings as well as to see what birds have been reported recently in your location, anywhere in the world.
- Getting Kids Involved: K-12 Materials and Professional Development for Educators as well as resources for parents.

My Bird Sightings
This mostly pictorial guide of 18 birds common to North Carolina is available in English, Spanish and Mandarin versions. It is appropriate for 4 to7 year-olds and can be used at home or on bird walks. Children enjoy putting a sticker next to the picture of the bird they just saw. We recommend printing these guides on white card stock. For bird walks, it is helpful to attach a string or yarn for carrying over the shoulder. We typically attach a strip of 18 stickers to the front with double-stick tape. Alternatively, children can draw a star or place a check mark next to their sightings.

It provides information in both Spanish and English on how to identify birds and features photos and descriptions of 51 different birds. More information on this bird guide can be found in the section entitled ¿CUÁL ES ESE PÁJARO? What’s That Bird.
