New Hope Bird Alliance is leading a Hawk Watch to Mahogany Rock on the Blue Ridge Parkway. This is a major migration route for broad-winged hawks and other raptors. We will also visit local bird sites (Stone Mt. State Park, Doughton Park, Mahogany Rock Mt.) for warblers and other fall migrants. David Anderson, Vern Bothwell and Tom Driscoll will lead this trip, which is limited to 14 participants.

A $75 donation to NHBA per person is requested. 

Mahogany Rock is a 2-1/2 hour drive from Durham. We ask that individuals carpool if possible and arrange their own accommodations. There are AirBnbs and cabins in the area. Local hotels include the High Meadows Inn in Roaring Gap, and the Alleghany Inn in Sparta.

Itinerary (subject to change):
- Friday, October 2, 9 AM, meet at Mahogany Rock overlook (milepost 235 BRP). 
- Saturday and Sunday, meet at 7 AM to bird local areas. Regroup at Mahogany rock at 10 AM for hawks (best in late morning or early afternoon). 

There are places to eat or to buy food in the surrounding communities.

From NC 98, take Baptist Road straight all the way to Rollingview.  Proceed past the kiosk, watch for poorly marked speed bumps, and go straight all the way to the parking loop at the end.

Please wear long pants, socks, and sturdy shoes (ticks and chiggers may be present). Sun and bug protection are also recommended. Bring snacks and water if you like. Heavy rain will result in cancellation.

New Hope Bird Alliance will take a group to the annual Thrush Event at a colleague’s home near the eastern end of Falls Lake. His yard has been cultivated with trees and plants that attract thrushes migrating through in the fall. We also will see migrating warblers, vireos, and other species.

The correct driveway is a couple hundred yards past this on the right. Look for 2 mailboxes and a NWF Habitat sign by the mailboxes. Go all the way to the end of the gravel road. When you get to where it splits take the left fork to the parking area.
