NHBA sponsors Spring and Christmas bird counts each year in a count circle centered in the area of Jordan Lake in Chatham County (count circle map). We encourage participants of all stripes—beginners and experts, young and old. If you have never counted before, we will team you up with more experienced people.

Visit our Bird Count Charts page to explore our historical data going back to 1977 for both our Spring and Christmas Bird Counts. On this page you may generate graphs of the abundance of individual bird species over time, and you may also download spreadsheets of the cumulative data.

In addition to the Jordan Lake Spring and Christmas bird counts, NHBA organizes quarterly Bald Eagle counts at Jordan Lake and promotes the Mini Breeding Bird Surveys in Orange, Durham, and Chatham Counties. There are also many other bird counts in North and South Carolina. Follow these links for more information:

Another great way to go birding with us is to join us on any one of several bird counts per year. We encourage participants of all stripes—beginners and experts, young and old. If you have never counted before, you will be teamed up with more experienced people. These include Spring and Christmas bird counts and quarterly Bald Eagle counts at Jordan Lake, one of our Important Bird Areas (IBAs). New Hope Bird Alliance is a steward to a pair of IBAs in our area: Jordan Lake and the Eno River.

Our members participate in Mini Breeding Bird Surveys in Orange, Durham, and Chatham Counties. You can also participate with family members and neighbors every February in the Great Backyard Bird Count in your own yards and neighborhood.

Bird counts are just one of many ways to contribute to Community Science efforts to help save our birds. For more information on participating in bird counts and all the other community science projects that you can get involved with, please visit our Citizen Science webpage.
